Summer 2020 Reflection on Leadership

collaborative grant writing
with urban think foundation

Sandra has not only worked with individuals but also with organizations to create change. Thanks to her undergraduate institution's partnership with a local non-profit,  she identified and wrote a grant supporting literacy programs for low-income middle schoolers. The funding goes to an initiative committed to forming the academic, social, and emotional foundation students need to succeed in middle school and beyond. This opportunity inspired her to become an active citizen in underrepresented communities, respecting the community's opinions and truthful experiences. She is committed to using her knowledge to forge coordinated service-learning programs as she becomes a faculty member herself.

Language Learning Volunteering

Sandra has actively worked to help grade school students learn to value their own cultures and the cultures of others.

As a foreign language helper at an elementary school, she collaborated to create a curriculum for a 5-day after-school program on Hispanic culture and language. She researched the material that helped her during my elementary days and supplemented that with resources from a Colombian publisher to create activities for fifth graders.

The kids were very involved in learning even after a long day in school. Having the responsibility of representing her heritage in a foreign country has been one of Sandra's most rewarding volunteer experiences. She aims to continue representing her culture in graduate school and beyond.
